Another notable occasion where his temperament was strained is when he was led to believe that Lina was dead in order to deceive the enemy He openly cries and expresses murderous rage toward her would-be killer , for which, for the first time ever in the series he whacks Lina in the head in way of admonishment for worrying him in which Lina, bashfully and uncharacteristically, apologizes.

In the novels, Gourry will also release an aura of killing intent when he is seriously angered, which intimidates even Lina. Besides the main Slayers light novel series, manga, and all of anime television series, Gourry also appears as a playable character in all of the Slayers video games and in some other media such as the film Slayers Premium. In the science fiction themed series Lost Universe , Slayers creator Hajime Kanzaka 's another media franchise, Lina and Gourry were mixed to create its male protagonist Kain Blueriver, [14] complete with its version of the Sword of Light, called Psi-Blade.

Very little is known about Gourry's immediate family and past, as he hardly if ever makes any mention of it, preferring rather to live in the present rather than dwell on the past. What is known is that he at least has a grandmother, a father and a brother, the latter of which he is supposedly on bad terms with, and his hometown has been mentioned to be within the Elmekian empire.

It was also implied that Gourry's father was a cruel individual. He is the descendant of the Swordsman of Light that many years ago slew the Demon Beast Zanaffar that terrorized the city of Sairaag. His family often feuded between themselves over who would become heir to the Sword of Light. It was also revealed in an interview by Kanzaka that Gourry's brother was killed as a result of the internal strife within the family.

When Gourry was 17, he stole the sword and ran away from home in attempt to stop the fighting. He was a wandering mercenary for the following several years even participating in a war , and nearly threw away the Sword of Light when he grew frustrated with the weapon. A short story "The Things That He Sees Beyond the Point of His Sword", [17] details his inner struggle and his change of heart: When Gourry was just about to chuck the heirloom into the sea, he was stopped by a traveling fisherman, who convinces Gourry to do something worthwhile with the sword.

In a strange twist of fate, it turns out this man is Lina's father, though neither Lina or Gourry are aware of this. Several days later, Gourry runs into Lina herself, and from that point on he is seldom seen without her. The only time his backstory was ever covered it did not come from his mouth nor did it take place in the present, alluding to the fact Gourry probably does not like talking about it. In the movie, Rowdy Gabriev is established as Gourry's ancestor - most likely his grandfather.

This has led many fans to believe that the elf princess Meiroon, who Rowdy has a crush on, is Gourry's grandmother. Kanzaka has struck down this notion, saying that by the time Rowdy was old enough to marry and have children that Meiroon would have still been a child herself, so Rowdy married a human causing his grandson, Gourry, to be fully human instead of part-elf as it was commonly assumed.

This has led to speculation of whether Gourry is actually part-dragon. Due to his constant exposure and sometimes being the receiving end of many spells, Gourry has developed a rather high toleration to magical attacks and damage in general.

Hajime Kanzaka also revealed in an interview that Gourry possesses a magical capacity that rivals Lina's. However, he further explained that Gourry would be incapable of utilizing spells due to his inadequate memory. While he is handy with any blunt object, Gourry's biggest contribution to a fight is his swordsmanship.

Not only does Gourry reveal himself to be a nearly invincible swordsman, he is found to be the owner of the Sword of Light, a legendary weapon which, when not possessing a metal blade, produces a blade of pure energy, which Gourry can activate by voice. The energy blade, which functions like a lightsaber from Star Wars , can cut through almost anything and even absorb, store and then release magic spells against his enemies.

When Phibrizzo released the seal on Sword of Light that withheld its full power, it was capable of firing beams of pure energy as well. His swordsmanship is downplayed as the series progresses in favor of the magic, but one occasion when he was placed under a spell and turned against his comrades he proved to be nigh unbeatable.

It is explained that the Sword of Light channels and amplifies the willpower of the wielder to create the blade, which would explain his enhanced power when under mind control as his will would have been reinforced by the one controlling him. The sword was later revealed to be not a weapon of light, but a weapon more closely associated with the mazoku , specifically Dark Star.

In the novels, he later procures a new sword called the Blast Sword, which absorbs the magical energies around the immediate area to sharpen the edge of its blade. It was even powerful enough to wound the astral body of the dark lord, Ruby Eye Shabranigdo. He has been shown to have moderate skills as a blacksmith, and can apparently repair his sword in a ridiculously short amount of time. Gourry Gabriev received Animage magazine's Anime Grand Prix awards for the best male hero of and , placing tenth and eight respectively.

Sometimes he cannot recall things he did only a matter of minutes beforehand. Despite this, he still has great intuition, especially out on the battlefield, and he can sometimes envision the motives of other people, such as when he would know what Lina's attack plan would be without her telling him about it first.

Another notable example of his acute observation skills is that he had figured out that Xelloss was a mazoku long before anyone else realized it, not mentioning it to the others only because he had thought it wasn't important and that it was "obvious". Surprisingly, Hajime Kanzaka has stated that Gourry actually has a magic capacity that would enable him to wield spells with a power and destructiveness that would near-rival Lina's. However, due to Gourry's inconsistent memory, he's rendered useless in the field of magic.

Lina Inverse : The only person Gourry is specifically close to in the series is Lina. In the beginning, he assumed she was a child who needed protection, but after he learned she was a famous sorceress, he became attached to her as a friend. Simply put, Lina is Gourry's reason for living, he himself stating that he would stay by her side "for the rest of his life".

He considers it his sole duty to protect her, and without this duty, he would have nothing. As Lina obviously has no need for help in protecting herself, the pair instead both look out for one another as opposed to Gourry being the only protector. The friendship between them eventually turned into love, which was affirmed when they were reunited after Gourry's time in captivity at the hands of Hellmaster Fibrizo.

The romantic aspect of their relationship is rarely if ever explored within any incarnations of the series, partly because of Lina's immaturity and discomfort with such subjects, as well as the fact that in reality, creator Hajime Kanzaka states that he isn't good at writing romantic scenes. However, it is still plainly clear to see the two have a very strong mutual bond, always traveling together and often being able to tell what the other is thinking.

She is one of the few people whose name Gourry consistently remembers even after long stretches of time without seeing each other, although he does mostly only by associating her name with her good cooking. He acts as a protector and is almost a doting brother-like figure around her, showing her compassion and sympathy when others aren't able to.

Zangulus : Gourry and him are both rivals in the first season of the anime and Zangulus was always determined to defeat the swordsman of light, though Gourry always seemed to have the upper hand. Though neither of them wanted to admit it at the time, they both have a grudging respect towards each other.

Gorun Nova takes the form of a sword with a blade of light, with sound effects resembling those of a lightsaber from Star Wars. As a result, it became more commonly known as the Sword of Light. Its true name was only known to a few. The Sword's design differs significantly from the design of the other weapons; this may be because, according to Xelloss , the Sword of Light was changed so it would be easier for humans to use.

Like the other Weapons of Light, the Sword of Light channels and amplifies the mental energy, or willpower, of the user, turning it into an attack both on the physical and the astral side. This makes it incredibly useful for fighting mazoku , who do not have physical bodies and therefore can only be hurt from the astral side.

It can also be used against foes whose astral bodies are sealed off or missing, and thus are immune to most magics like Zanaffar in the Slayers novels. The sword is powerful enough to destroy lesser demons and low-ranking mazoku in a single blow if the wielder can manage to hit them.

Even middle-ranking mazoku can be seriously wounded or killed by the sword, though for a human, striking one with it can prove exceptionally difficult given how easily these beings can teleport via plane shifting. High-ranking mazoku , however, often display near immunity to the weapon's power, requiring more powerful techniques to kill. The size and length of the blade appears to correspond with the strength of the user's mental energy, or willpower.

Those with strong willpower create a long blade of light, while those with weak or weakened mental energy create smaller, sometimes flickering blades. When not in use, the blade of light disappears, leaving only an empty hilt. An ordinary metal blade can be put in place of the light blade, and thus can be used like an ordinary sword.

Since magic operates on the astral side, the Sword of Light can also be used to channel and amplify spells. For example, Lina Inverse channeled the Giga Slave into the Sword in order to destroy one of the pieces of Shabranigdu. The sword can also absorb spells to become stronger for short periods of time. How he made it and the full extent of its power is unknown, but he did imply that it is a little bit weaker than the original when it flickered out after trying to deflect a Dragon Slave.

The hilt of the Sword is also different from design shown in the previous 3 seasons. How Gorun Nova and the other four weapons got to the Slayers world is unknown. At some point, either before or after the barrier was erected, the sword came into the possession of the Gabriev family, though they were not aware of its true nature or origins. He manifests as an androgynous little boy in order to trick his victims into underestimating him. Phibrizzo has complete control over death and the souls of the departed.

He is able to raise thousands of people from the grave as living dead under his control with their memories and personality intact. He can also encase people in a life-absorbing green crystal, or kill anyone simply by breaking a golden marble that represents their lives.

Intelligent and cunning; he knows how to manipulate people, and convincingly pretends to be an ordinary child. His eagerness to destroy the world goes far beyond any other monster's. Though cruel and sadistic, his personality fits his childish appearance, as he enjoys making fun of his victims and using people like toys to entertain himself.

It was Phibrizzo who ignited the War of the Monster's Fall, first as a conflict between humans, then as a worldwide war between monsters and dragons, in order to awaken the part of Shabranigdu sealed within the sorcerer Lei Magnus. He is probably the one who decided to create the Monster Barrier, which isolated the battlefields to the outer and inner worlds, weakening the dragons' forces.

He uses Gaav and Xellos to lead Lina to the discovery of the Giga Slave spell, then joins Lina as a young pickpocket to watch what happens. However, the Giga Slave summons the Lord of Nightmares herself in Lina's body, who obliterates him, giving him the destruction he craved. Valgaav is one of the main adversaries in the third series of the anime, Slayers TRY. Once known as Prince Val of the Ancient Dragon clan, he is nearly killed by the Golden Dragons, who feared the dark powers of the Ancient Dragons and exterminated them.

He is saved at the last moment by Gaav, who sees in him a powerful ally and a spirit of hatred towards the Golden Dragons for their betrayal. Gaav bestows upon him the powers of a monster and renames him "Valgaav". Valgaav and Gaav are separated when the other four Demon Lords create the barrier separating the outer and inner worlds.

Valgaav is loyal only to his savior, Gaav, and gives no allegiance to any side, be it Slayers, dragons, gods, or monsters. With the combined power of a monster and Ancient Dragon, Valgaav is the strongest of Gaav's servants. However, he is notably weaker than Gaav. His Ancient Dragon power conflicts with the monster power given to him by Gaav, causing him pain. He is able to best Xellos in a one-on-one fight by using Ragud Mezagis, one of the five Darkstar weapons.

He survives a magically amplified Dragon Slave fired directly into his body. Despite his prowess as a warrior, Valgaav is radically unstable and reckless. He activates the gateway created to summon Darkstar with only two of the five weapons required. Although the gateway is closed by other gods from the Overworld, Darkstar fires a blast through it that destroys Valgaav.

He reappears at the end of the season merged with the fusion of Darkstar and Volphied, and acts as an arbiter of the two. Possessing the powers of both dragon gods and monster lords, he is easily the most powerful being faced in the entire storyline of Slayers , although his power is cut in half by the open gateway. At the end of Slayers TRY , he is reborn as an egg and falls under the care of Filia and two of his former demi-human subordinates, Jillas and Gravos.

Zuuma is an assassin hired to kill Lina Inverse in Slayers Revolution. He became an assassin solely for the purpose of killing Lina. Gourry uses Pokota's Sword of Light to blast one of his arms off, while Lina blasts the other. Zuuma returns in Slayers Evolution-R as the main antagonist alongside Shabranigdu.

He orders Lina to come to the city of Vezendi or he will kill a merchant named Radok, who has the Hellmaster's Jar. It turns out that Zuuma actually is Radok, and it is all a ploy to draw Lina in. Although it is uncertain precisely why Zuuma wants to kill Lina, she once killed a group of bandits that were responsible for killing his wife, thus denying him vengeance.

In the manga, he is killed by the Ragna Blade, but in the anime, he has his hands slashed off a second time before Xellos appears and kills him in order to steal the Hellmaster's Jar. While under the command of Zelgadis and Rezo, Zolf infiltrated a group of bandits in order to steal a statue containing the philosopher's stone.

But he was injured when Lina robbed the gang and, with bandages covering his entire body, she refers to him as a "mummy" as he pursues her leading a group of trolls. After Zelgadis' break with Rezo, Zolf chooses to follow Zelgadis and remain under his command, also removing his bandages.

Unlike Zolf, Rodimus, and Noonsa, his colleagues, Dilgear is actually quite violent during battles and will even kill his foes. Although Dilgear was placed under Zelgadis' rule, his ultimate loyalty is to Rezo. When Zolf and Rodimus arrive, Dilgear thinks that he has been saved, but Rodimus says that their loyalty is to Zelgadis, not Rezo. In the anime, Dilgear is seriously wounded by Zolf but is revived by his half-troll regenerative abilities.

However, instead of seeking revenge he ends up as Luna Inverse's pet "Spot". The exact circumstances of this radical change in Dilgear's life are unknown. In the manga, Dilgear is a bounty hunter sent by Eris, along with Rahanimu and Vrumugun, to eliminate Gourry and Lina.

Strangely, Dilgear vanishes shortly after his introduction. It is possible that he either flees or is simply killed off-screen. He is lecherous and has red hair. Although a first-rate swordsman, he is not on the level of Gourry, whom he greatly respects after seeing his skills. Lantz' life is saved thanks to Lina performing healing magic on him. About a month later, Lantz, now with a beard, joins Lina and Gourry in their fight against the clone of Rezo the Red Priest.

Not being able to fight demons as effectively as his comrades, Sylphiel gives him the Bless Blade, which purifies and amplifies his will, allowing him to damage demons. Lantz successfully uses it to defeat the demon Vizea. Talim is a fat bald man who loves eating and smoking cigars. Talim hires Lina and Gourry to work as bodyguards alongside Lantz and Rod and protect him until the election. Daymia is the balding and bearded son of a noble family, and is considered crazy by both Talim and Halciform.

According to Talim, Daymia claims to be researching immortality by experimenting with homunculi and chimera, which Lina and Gourry end up fighting. But unknown to Lina and Gourry, Talim had learned that Halciform was kidnapping and experimenting on townspeople to obtain immortality. Because Halciform had obtained quasi-immortality by making a contract with Seigram, Talim recruited Daymia, who previously aided Halciform in his research until they had a falling out, to seal him away.

When unwittingly freed by Lina and Gourry, Halciform has Seigram curse Daymia into an immortal mass of flesh and decapitates Talim, whose head he keeps alive in a tank until killing him as collateral damage in an attack on Lina. Gracia leaves after Phil's unnamed wife is killed by an assassin, and now calls herself "Naga the White Serpent". Both Randy and Alfred are killed in separate attempts to seize the throne for themselves. Though Phil's father Eldoran Seyruun is technically still the king, he is old, sickly, and bedridden, so Phil more or less runs the country.

Possibly due to his wife's death and his eldest daughter's absence, he is very close with and protective of his youngest daughter Amelia. Like Amelia, Phil has a strong belief in justice, and he is also a pacifist. However, if Phil sees something he believes to be unjust, he will not hesitate to use force. Unlike most of the Seyruun royal family, Phil has no magical powers, but his brute strength crushes injustice with attacks such as Pacifist Crush and Kindness to All Creatures Kick.

This sheer strength is sufficient to destroy lesser demons. She appears in the novels periodically, but her only appearance in the anime is a shot of legs and a cigarette. Xellos serves as her right-hand man, and everything Xellos does in the end leads back to her. She is a popular character in the fandom world, and most of what is known about her personality is fan-based. Although he cannot use magic, he wields a weapon called the Howling Sword, a magical sword created by Rezo that can shoot great gusts of wind.

Zangulus and the sorcerer Vrumugun were originally hired as bounty hunters by Eris and Copy Rezo to capture Lina, Gourry, and Zelgadis and bring them to Sairaag. Zangulus becomes obsessed with fighting Gourry to see who is the better swordsman. They duel in Rezo's lab, but Gourry wins in the end, and Zangulus leaves. However, Gourry is being held prisoner by Hellmaster Phibrizzo, so Zangulus does not get a chance to duel him a second time.

He does help Lina and the others fight the Hellmaster. It is during this time that Zangulus meets and falls in love with Martina, who he marries after the battle. Zangulus is yet another character created for the anime, and does not appear in the original novels or the manga. Jillas' people were nearly hunted to extinction. After being injured by humans and losing his left eye, Jillas is saved by Valgaav. He is partnered with Gravos Maunttop, who he refers to as "Boss". He has no knowledge of magic or swordplay, but is skilled with guns, gunpowder and various explosives.

He also has a knack for exploiting the friction between people to his advantage, and employs psychological warfare against the Slayers to great effect. After everyone is separated and Valgaav is presumed dead, Jillas is rescued by a fox named Elena and her son Palou, who call him "uncle".

He abandons them to seek vengeance when he discovers that the Slayers are still alive. Filia saves him from the explosion of one of his own bombs, after which he calls her "Boss", a name that makes her uncomfortable.

After Valgaav is reborn as a pure Ancient Dragon and is adopted by Filia, Jillas and Gravos who was literally launched into orbit by the Dragon Slave become her partners and help her sell maces and pottery in a shop. His first appearance in the series is in Episode 54 of TRY. Gravos was almost killed by his own people, causing him to lose his right eye.

Valgaav saves him and becomes his master. During a struggle to get the holy magic and the black magic vessels from Princess Sera and Prince Marco, Gravos loses control of Ragudo Mezegis when he is hit by the Dragon Slave and is knocked into the distance, presumed dead. However, he is alive and well in the epilogue of TRY , once again partnered with Jillas and helping Filia run a store that sells maces and pottery. Milgasia finds the Slayers when they enter the Valley of Dragons. In the anime, Martina tags along as well.

In the novels, Milgasia and his elven companion Mephis join Lina in her travels for a while. Milgasia is probably over 1, years old, as he seems to have first-hand knowledge about Xellos and the War of the Monster's Fall. At first, he is worried about the Slayers's association with Xellos, until Gourry helps him realize that they are not intimidated or influenced by Xellos in any way. Milgasia's first appearance is in Episode 20 of Slayers NEXT , which roughly equals the seventh novel and manga issue.

Her father is an ex-mercenary and her mother is an ex-sorceress. Luna and Lina's relationship is not particularly affectionate. Apparently, when they were younger, Lina would misbehave and Luna would "punish" her by making her do grueling workouts. The most notorious incident between the two was when Lina, ever keen on an opportunity to make some extra cash, set up a device that projected an image of Luna while she was taking a bath. Luna's reaction "compelled" Lina to begin her quest.

A fragment of Ceifeed's will is lodged within Luna. As the Knight of Ceifeed, Luna wields an immense amount of holy power. Luna never appears in person during the novels or the anime, but Hajime Kanzaka has said that she is slightly more powerful than Xellos. Luna, being on the side of the gods, knows she is not the candidate in the prophecy; she turns down Filia's request and suggests Lina for the job instead.

He is said to be the sole source of misery and negative emotions in the Slayers world. Defeated long ago by Flare Dragon Ceifeed, Shabranigdu was split into seven parts and scattered throughout the world. Lei Magnus was a great sage who created devastating spells, such as the Dragon Slave and shamanism's powerful fire spell Blast Bomb. However, his power came at a price. When the piece of Shabranigdu within him awakened, he led the monsters against the Dragon Kings.

It was a costly victory; Ragradia was destroyed, leaving only her memories and knowledge, which became the Claire Bible. The remaining four Demon Lords Dynast Grausherra, Deep Sea Dolphin, Beastmaster Zelas Metallium, and Hellmaster Phibrizzo erected a shield that sealed the divine powers in the outer world, separated from the inner world where the Slayers story begins.

A second portion of Shabranigdu awakens in the first Slayers arc. Rezo the Red Priest awakens the fragment sealed within his eyes when he uses the philosopher's stone in an attempt to cure his blindness. Lina confronts the unbound piece of Shabranigdu, invoking the Giga Slave to defeat him. It is possible that Shabranigdu could have survived this attack, but a fragment of Rezo's remaining will forces open its defenses. It possesses the true body of Pokota, and when Pokota returns to his body, it causes instability between the occupying souls, allowing Lina's perfected Giga Slave to destroy Shabranigdu.

In the final Slayers novel, a third fragment of Shabranigdu is buried in the soul of a character named Luke, who had previously appeared as a rival. Driven to despair by the events of the previous book, Luke is contacted by the fragment of Ruby-Eye within him and manages to strike a deal with it: he will fight Lina and Gourry one more time, and if he is victorious, the fragment will wholly revive and complete the monster race's goal of destroying the world.

As Luke ultimately wishes to die in the battle, rather than destroy the world, his self-destructive impulse allows him and the fragment to be slain by the Dragon Slave. This battle is the only known exception to the monsters' immunity to black magic drawn from their own power described by Lina as, "Hey, help me kill you" [ citation needed ].

Although she has no defined gender, she is generally considered female because she possessed Lina's body and took her form in her sole appearance in the series. Unlike most creator deities in fiction, the Lord of Nightmares is not considered benevolent and humans do not worship her.

Even among those steeped in the magical arts, few are aware of her existence. Those of the monster race are, and refer to her as "the Mother of All Beings". The Lord of Nightmares created the entire Slayers multiverse , including the futuristic galaxy portrayed in Lost Universe , and two other known worlds, the realms of Chaotic Blue and Death Fog.

Both Shabranigdu and his rival Ceifeed are her direct creations. The Lord of Nightmares may have done this simply because she wanted to watch gods, monsters, and mortals contend for her amusement, a hypothesis adopted by Valgaav in Slayers TRY in his attempt to remake the world. Another theory is that the Lord of Nightmares requires the chaos of battle for sustenance. Lina is the only human known to directly use the power of the Lord of Nightmares in spells, and she is reluctant to do so.

Spells that call upon the power of the Lord of Nightmares are notoriously unreliable, with failure frequently having devastating consequences. The Giga Slave, for instance, could theoretically destroy existence itself if miscast. Lina created the Giga Slave when she was much younger by combining parts of the Dragon Slave's incantation with chaos words of the Lord of Nightmares that she found in a Claire Bible manuscript. When she cast the spell for the first time, she turned a body of water into a sea of death, where no living thing can grow.

Before this point, the Lord of Nightmares had no physical form, having sacrificed her body to create the Sea of Chaos and the Four Worlds. Using Lina's body as a vessel, the power of Chaos obliterates Phibrizzo. She also makes good on Lina's final thoughts and wishes by reviving her companions and allowing them to see her. She declares that Lina is gone forever, consumed by her power, with Xellos explaining that when "existence calls forth oblivion, it must return to oblivion".

Instead, the Slayers create a power very similar to that of Chaos by combining the powers of the monsters and the gods, Light and Dark, to destroy Valgaav and Darkstar. In each world of this universe, a Dragon King and a Demon King struggle against each other to direct the fate of the world. Ceifeed successfully weakens his demonic counterpart by cutting Shabranigdu into seven pieces. Ceifeed dies in the process, but leaves behind four beings to continue his struggle: Aqualord Ragradia, Flarelord Valbazard, Earthlord Rangort, and Airlord Valwyn.

A fragment of his will is lodged in Luna Inverse, Lina's older sister, who is known as the "Ceifeed Knight". In his own world, Darkstar is the equivalent of Shabranigdu in power, as Volphied is the equivalent of Ceifeed. Darkstar devours Volphied, but grows so powerful that he can't control his own power, and becomes a being seeking only the destruction of everything.

However, Valgaav reveals that Darkstar "devoured" Volphied by mutual agreement between the two. They realized how meaningless the eternal fight between gods and monsters was, and fused to bring "purification" to the worlds by destroying and remaking them so that gods and monsters would not have to constantly fight. Half monster and half god, the new Darkstar merges with Valgaav, who is the same combination.

Darkstar's "astral body" is different from those of any other monster, making magic useless against him. Darkstar can only be defeated by the five weapons he created. When Filia and Xellos combine the powers of Light and Dark, of Ceifeed and Shabranigdu, and unleash it through the five weapons of Darkstar, the resulting Chaos force vanquishes him for good.

After this happened, Gourry acquired the Blast Sword , a sword which recycles magical energy in the blade to make it become increasingly sharper. Milgazia the golden dragon had to put a spell on it so that it would be dull enough to be useful. One running gag regarding Gourry is that he has been seen dressed as a woman in the seventeenth episodes of the first three seasons of the Slayers anime.

Gourry is among the world's greatest swordsmen. His battle ability is formidable, especially taking into consideration that he does not use any sort of magic whatsoever. However, his abilities are often overshadowed by his poor memory and intelligence problems. Gourry often does not remember important facts, or even the names of his enemies.

Sometimes he cannot recall things he did only a matter of minutes beforehand. Despite this, he still has great intuition, especially out on the battlefield, and he can sometimes envision the motives of other people, such as when he would know what Lina's attack plan would be without her telling him about it first. At the end of the fifteenth volume of the original novel series when Gourry asks Lina to visit back her hometown in Zephillia, Lina thinks that he is proposing to her and that is the reason he wants to visit her family. Though his intelligence in most every day things is severely lacking, he is an incredible swordsman, performing extremely well against both regular and supernatural foes in the heat of battle.

He also often shows excellent skills of observation, intuition, and is a good judge of character, though sometimes it comes a bit late to be of any good. A rather notable example of his exceptional observational skills is that he apparently figured out Xellos was not human long before anyone else did.

When questioned about why he never said anything sooner about it, Gourry further dumbfounded everyone when he stated he thought it was obvious. He also noted in the novels that he was well aware that Lina was a sorceress when he first met her. While Gourry may not be the smartest of characters, his ignorance is purposefully beneficial to helping the audience understand what is going on; hence making him a device for exposition.

The other three main characters are well educated and have knowledge regarding the cosmology and history of the world which is assumed everyone in the world would know. Since Gourry, however, does not know or remember these facts, it forces the other three to verbalize these facts, which allows for the audience to learn what is assumed to be well known - even the author himself admitted to be making use of this fact. In the novels, it is also heavily implied that Gourry tends to purposely obfuscate his intelligence at times to annoy or tease Lina.

To his credit, Gourry is extremely loyal to his friends and allies and has displayed a great deal of patience with Lina and her tantrums. The only time his own patience is questioned is when he does not have access to food, much like Lina, as they both share a great passion for fine cooking.
